Day 1 – We left Santa Cruz for the first day of our 17 day summer trip to Washington State. After 6 hours of driving, we stopped at Shasta Lake Gregory Beach campground which is just a few miles off of I5.
Shasta Lake Gregory Beach
This great campground in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is along the shore of Shasta Lake. It has traditional campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, but they also allow campers to drive out to the lake shore and boondock next to the water’s edge. The short journey from the campsites to the lake shore can be a bit treacherous in the dark because of the rocks and ruts, but we were able to find a nice spot about 50 feet from the water.
Since there are no towns nearby, the stars were stunning with the Milky Way visible. In the morning we woke up to take the first look at our campsite.
We packed up early Friday morning and headed into the town of Mt. Shasta where we ate breakfast at Seven Sons Coffee and Cafe. This cafe gets great reviews on Yelp.
After breakfast we headed out for a long drive to one of Gi’s special fishing spots along the Crooked River in Oregon.

Things we learned
- The water level in Shasta Lake was higher this year which allowed us to get closer to the shoreline.
- The trains run along the Sacramento River so you may hear one or two trains rolling through the valley at all hours of the night.
